How can we adopt a working name?

If you and the trustees feel you would like to add a working name, you should check your governing document as it should explain the procedure to follow. Some organisations are better known by their working name, eg:

  • Sport Relief and Comic Relief are working names for Charity Projects

You may feel that an acronym could be used if your charity name is long eg:

  • RSPCA – Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
  • RNLI – Royal National Lifeboat Institution

Members of the public are more likely to search the register of charities for a charity by its working name or acronym as it’s more widely known by these.

If you are adding a working name you must inform us so we can update the register of charities. You can search the register of charities to find out if there are other charities with similar names.

When you are ready to proceed you can use our online form which takes you through the options relevant to your circumstances and explains what you need to do.
