Can people connected to trustees be paid?

A connected person may be paid by your charity without our authority if a provision is within your charity’s governing document. Connected persons include:

  • the trustees themselves
  • trustees’ close relatives
  • employees or officers of the charity
  • the spouse or civil partner of any of the above persons
  • organizations controlled by such people who have a substantial interest

A connected person may be paid by the charity without our authority where:

  • there is express authority to do so in the governing document, and
  • the connected person and trustee are financially independent of each other

If the above do not apply you will need our authority. Our guidance on making payments provides further information and how to apply for us for authority:

Trustees must also be aware of potential conflicts of interest and should manage these appropriately.
