The Regulator for Charities in England and Wales

Charity Commission Welcomes Cabinet Office Review

The Charity Commission welcomed today's publication of "Private Action, Public Benefit", the Cabinet Office’s review of the law and regulation of the not-for-profit sector. Charities form the major part of this sector.

Charity Commissioner Julia Unwin said:

"This is an important and wide-ranging review which the Commission has supported throughout. We welcome it and hope that it will be widely read and debated within the sector. The Commission will be playing its full part in that debate. Overall we think this is a good set of proposals which will promote the health and vitality of the sector, help charities in their work and enable us to continue to regulate them effectively in the public interest."

The Charity Commission supported the 12-month review by seconding a member of its staff to the review team and by providing ongoing technical advice on legal and regulatory issues.

The review has been issued as a public consultation document. It makes proposals for changes to reduce bureaucracy and restrictions for charities, to modernise charity law and to make charities more accountable to donors and the public. It also reinforces the Commission’s role as the regulator for charities in England and Wales.

As an independent regulator the Charity Commission is free to respond frankly to the report. The Commission will consider its response to the proposals in due course and will highlight those recommendations it welcomes, alongside any which it feels need further development or re-examination."
